Hamish, a majestic Scottish Highland steer, lives on a peaceful farm in Virginia with his devoted human, Marc.

Weighing nearly 2,000 pounds, this fluffy giant might look imposing, but he melts completely when Marc brings out a brush.

Marc adopted Hamish when he was just 10 months old and much smaller than he is today. From that moment on, the two formed an inseparable bond, spending every day side by side on the farm.

Hamish adores being brushed and stands patiently as Marc tends to his thick, shaggy coat. The ritual is more than grooming; it’s a quiet moment of trust that deepens the connection between them.

Over time, Marc realized that Hamish needed companionship from his own kind. That’s when little Kyloe entered their lives, a sickly and undersized Highland calf in need of rescue.

Kyloe was fragile at first, but Hamish welcomed him like a calm, protective big brother. While Hamish is gentle and steady, Kyloe is bursting with energy and mischief, small in stature but overflowing with personality.

The trio quickly became a family of three best friends. Hamish and Kyloe spend their days grazing, exploring, and occasionally competing for Marc’s attention, each secure in the knowledge that they are safe.

Unlike many farm animals, they will never face slaughter or culling. Their home at Thistle Do Farm offers them a lifetime of safety, affection, and dignity.

Hamish and Kyloe’s story inspired Marc to begin transforming his property into a farm animal sanctuary. His vision is to provide a haven for injured, unwanted, or overlooked animals who deserve more than a commercial fate.

The farm has already begun the process of becoming a nonprofit organization, though the COVID-19 pandemic temporarily slowed those efforts. Despite setbacks, Marc and his supporters remain committed to creating a lasting refuge.

In the meantime, life at the farm continues with quiet joy. Each day, Marc showers Hamish and Kyloe with love, proving that even a 2,000-pound Highland steer can be someone’s best friend and cherished companion.
